BLINSHAM PINETUM

A regional centre for regenerative agriculture in a special Devonshire landscape.

A careful architectural masterplan aligning new buildings with the land’s ecological strategy.

Renovation of an Elizabethan farmhouse, and sensitive reuse of existing rural buildings.

Low-impact architecture designed to honour the land.

BUILDINGS THAT HONOUR THE LAND

Blinsham Pinetum is a 108-acre estate in Devon, comprising pastures, ponds, gardens, a pinetum (a rare collection of 1000s of pine species), and a small cluster of rural buildings including an Elizabethan farmhouse, a disused stone cow barn, and a modern agricultural barn.

The new custodians of the land are maintaining the legacy of the pinetum while establishing a regional centre for the exploration of regenerative agricultural techniques, developed in collaboration with Digg & Co.

Natural Building Studio was engaged to prepare an architectural site brief, and masterplan to sit alongside the ecology-led land strategy, ensuring that any future buildings honour the land and strengthen its ecological intent. The work began with a structured site briefing and feasibility study, testing the client’s ambitions against planning viability, operational needs, and ecological constraints.

This disciplined early analysis ensured that any future buildings would strengthen – rather than undermine – the ecological credibility of the land and the wider estate strategy.

The resulting framework identifies opportunities to sensitively renovate existing buildings and introduce carefully sited low-impact structures, with Phase 1 focused on the renovation and extension of the listed farmhouse. Phase 2 introduces new agricultural buildings supporting the regenerative farming programme led by Digg & Co. Phase 3 proposes the retrofit of the existing modern storage barn into a farm-to-fork eatery and micro-cidery, creating a public interface for the land’s produce. Phase 4 explores the conversion of the existing stone barn into guest accommodation, enabling visitors to experience the landscape and its regenerative practices.
